Conservation Work

The Stephen Birch Practice was established in 1992 by its sole principal Stephen Birch on the back of its first independent commission. Since that time, the workload has encompassed work to churches ancient and modern; doctor’s surgeries; and work for Housing Associations as well as extensions to, and conversions of private houses and commissions for one-off house designs.

The ethos of the company is personal service; listening carefully to the customer’s needs and then imagining how those needs can most creatively, effectively and economically be met. There is no house style; whether your enthusiasm is for cutting edge contemporary design or beautifully executed traditional work you will be met with a knowledgeable, professional and deeply interested response. In fact our speciality is finding innovative solutions to design problems that others have found intractable.

The scope of services offered is as follows:

Initial meeting and discussion of the scope of the project (usually offered without charge)

Detailed survey of existing buildings/sites and formulations of detailed brief including budgetary constraints.

Outline proposals: these are worked up through further iterations as necessary until the customer is satisfied.

Planning Applications: Submitting, negotiating with Planning Authorities and presenting at Planning Committee where necessary.

Detailed proposals: following the establishment of a detailed brief, drawings suitable for Building Regulations application and for Construction use are completed.

Contract administration: finding suitable contractors and negotiating costs, inspecting the quality of work and dealing with the contractor on your behalf.
